[info]avron: Something of an FYI

I've met and developed friendships with a lot of people in the past couple of years, and for the most part some of the socialisation issues I had in previous years haven't been obvious in my interactions with them.

Just after half way through my time at high school I started attending a youth group on Sunday nights. Many of those were pot-luck evenings, and it was because of those that I first became aware of the issue I have eating in company. From the beginning I would lose my appetite around an hour before I was going to be leaving for Youth Group and would often still be lacking hunger by the time I was heading home. More commonly I was able to eat an hour or so after arriving, well after everyone else had eaten. This issue has continued in other interactions since then, to the extent that one of the reasons I don't go out to restaurants is the fact I have no appetite when out and it seems like a complete waste of time and money.
When I first joined the Christchurch Euro Gamers at the start of 2008 I had expected to spend my time in that house feeling somewhat unwell. Fortunately for me that wasn't the case, my belief is that the game playing was enough of a distraction, and the expectation that I could easily never go back would have helped as well.
Early in 2010 I first went along to SAGA on a Tuesday night (after going to one game afternoon at a friends suggestion). I did have some of the unease I'm used to with new situations, but again, getting to play a game I already knew and knowing the feeling would pass helped. Such that I quickly settled and I don't believe I had similar issues with most of the regular Tuesday/Thursday night sessions since that first night.

I do still find myself feeling like I used to 15 years ago though. Knowing I'm going to be meeting people I don't know, or going somewhere out of the ordinary for me tends to leave my stomach feeling odd. To the point of being physically sick on the worst occasions, although that's only happened on very rare occasion. When I remove myself from the situation, whatever situation that might be, I tend to get better within an hour or two.
For some reason there seems to have been a couple of occasions recently when I have suffered recurrences of this issue in familiar settings. The most recent was Monday night, when I was feeling nauseous shortly before gaming and while there, but felt much better a couple of hours after I got home. Going back a couple of weeks I ended up leaving Mini-Con shortly after arriving on the Sunday as I was unwell there; after spending about 90 minutes in bed I woke feeling nearly normal again and went back where I stayed for the rest of the scheduled gaming time.

I have no idea what other people will wish to do with this information, but I figure it's going to explain at least some of my choices in life.
